The Cairo-born artist Laila Gohar is a modern renaissance woman. She’s built a reputation for edible spectacle working on installations and events with fashion brands like Hermès, Gucci, and Byredo and last year launched her craft-focused tableware line, Gohar World. Now she has another partnership to add to her belt, as a global ambassador for the Luxury Collection, part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of 30 hotel brands.
“My favorite way to discover a destination is through the senses, and enjoying a meal or drink while traveling is an incredible way to learn about the local culture,” Gohar said in a release. “Often the way a table or bar is set, and the objects used, is just as important as the food and beverage offerings themselves.”
We caught up with the jet-setting Gohar to find out how she likes to travel, where she turns for inspiration, and what she’s shopping for now.
ELLE DECOR: Do you have a signature scent?
Laila Gohar: I wear a light scent by the French beauty brand Officine Universelle Buly, called Eau Triple Sumo Hinoki. It’s very subtle and doesn’t stick to your skin, which I like.
ED: What about fragrance at home?
LG: There’s generally the scent of something cooking.
ED: What music are you listening to?
LG: Our Gohar World launch party playlist by Mia Moretti.
ED: What do you serve with when entertaining?
LG: My line of barware, in collaboration with the Luxury Collection. We created a martini glass that’s paired with an olive pick. A classic martini is always a crowd pleaser.
ED: What do you think is the perfect host gift?
LG: You can’t go wrong with a Gohar World chicken-foot necklace.
ED: How do you dress your bed?
LG: In Magniberg linens.
ED: What’s the most important piece of furniture you own?
LG: The most sentimental is a collection of Ingo Maurer lamps. It is a brand I love and cherish.
ED: Favorite hotel?
LG: The Prince des Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel in Paris.
ED: Where do you look for inspiration?
LG: For design, I would recommend Jacqueline Sullivan Gallery in TriBeCa, right next to my apartment. I also love Neue Galerie on the Upper East Side, as well as Karma Gallery, on the Lower East Side.
ED: What are your beauty rituals?
LG: I make a spritz of water and orange blossom flower to use as my toner and body spray. I also cook with it! I also have a lot of Olaplex hair care products in my bathroom.
ED: What’s a pantry staple you can’t live without?
LG: I always have some really good bottarga, anchovies, and olive oil.
